I read a quote this week that went something like this: “You can’t out exercise a poor diet!” The author’s assertion was that 80% of our fitness is controlled by our diet! I think many of us think “as long as I’m active I can eat what I want!” I do think there is a certain truth about that…at least in terms of burning more calories the more active you are. However, the reality is we really are what we eat…or we quickly become it!! I’m not a big proponent of counting every calorie, but there is a real wisdom about being aware of what and how much you are putting in your body. I think the real question is WHAT are we eating, perhaps moreso than HOW MUCH!
There is so much health-related information at our fingertips…and much of it is confusing, and contradictory. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to diet and exercise programs…but there are certain basic truths. And sometimes, you just have to find what works for you! Activity is good…eating in moderation is good…avoiding excess sugars and processed carbs is good…strength training is good. Beyond that things get a bit more complex! What about eating grains? What kinds of meat should I eat? Can you eat too much fruit?
So…what in the world is a body to do???? Start with the basics…eat foods that are not overly processed. I believe the closer food is to it’s natural state, the better! Vegetables, fruits, lean meats…are a good place to start. And while your focus on nutrition is improving…MOVE YOUR BODY! Walk, bike, cut the grass, work in the garden, climb some stairs…just move! Someone much smarter than me once said “a body at rest will remain at rest…a body in motion will remain in motion…” (loosely translated!!). Hmmm…sound like anyone YOU know????
No one can do this for you. Do it for YOU…and you and the ones you love will benefit! Before you know it, you will be enjoying your “best fitness…for life”!
